Ex-Super Eagles striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has described the disposition of Villarreal of Spain star, Ikechukwu Uche towards his recent shut-out from the national team as what every player should emulate as he likens the player’s calmness and maturity.
Akpoborie, while speaking with SportsDay on telephone, said playing for one’s national team should be by invitation not by lobby which may distract the coach from making right decision.
The former Racing Ferol, Recreativo Huelva, Getafe and Real Zaragoza attacker, who scored his first hat-trick as a professional to help to a 5-2 away routing of RagoVallecano January this year is one of the best strikers Nigeria has at the moment.
Uche, who says his goals will speak for him in getting a recall to the Eagles, has scored 12 goals this season, which the petit lad, who debut for Nigeria in 2007 and was part of the squad that competed in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, believes he should be at Brazil 2014 on merit.
Despite the yearning of Nigerians for his return to the Eagles, Uche is keeping mute on the issue and, while Akpoborie said he cannot faulty Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi’s decision on the player, he admits that selection should be on merit.
“Uche has done the right thing by refusing to get angry or speak about his feelings; that is evidence of maturity. If Keshi feels he is needed, he will invite him. Playing for the national team should be by invitation,” Akpoborie said.
