Osaze, Anichebe Could Go To World Cup
Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi may have no option but to recall the likes of out-of-favour players like Osaze Odemwingie, Ike Uche and Victor Anichebe into the Eagles squad.
There are strong indications to the effect that the former Eagles captain would bow to pressure from higher quarters to include these players and others who have been out before now to make a strong field of those to fight for a place in Nigeria’s team to the Brazil 2014 World Cup.
This much was made known to Tribunesport by a highly influential member of the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) who pleaded for anonymity.
According to the source, the list of those that will make the pre-World Cup camp has to be those who are really commanding shirts in their respective clubs. “I think by now we have gone past personal issues, it is now a national project, and Keshi himself knows this, so don’t be surprised if the likes of Osaze make their way into the list that would be released soonest,” our source said.
He said Keshi himself has risen beyond all this noise about personal prejudice against players. “If you have been following the news you would know that the coach himself has had discussions with some of these players people say he will not invite.”
However, corroborating the technical committee member’s position, Keshi’s former team mate and one-time coach of the Eagles Austine Eguavoen said: “The Keshi I know will not drop Nigeria’s best for sentimental reasons, whether we like it or not, the likes of Osaze and Ike (Uche) are doing great in their clubs and as a coach that wants result, he will not drop them as far as they key into his tactical quest.”
He also noted that this may be a very last chance for any big-headed player to come near the Eagles, because Keshi does not joke with team discipline and bonding.
It will be recalled that Keshi himself told newsmen that he holds audience with the likes of Odemwingie, adding that he (Odemwingie) has apologised and that the Eagles as a national team is big enough for any Nigerian player doing well in his club, be it local or foreign.
